Advantages And Disadvantages Of In Memory Database Management

Database management is the main pillar for business applications in recent years. The main focus of an enterprise system is on transactional and analytical processing. In-memory database management system is an approach for transaction processing and analytical systems using a columnar in-memory database. In the recent years, this concept has gained wide popularity in the industry and more number of companies are adapting this method to handle their data. Because of the numerous advantages involved, using in-memory database has proven to improve the efficiency and profitability of the business. Analytical data resides in separate data warehouses, to which it is replicated in batch jobs. Thus, flexible real-time reporting is not possible and leaders are forced to make decisions based on insufficient information in very short time frames. With in-memory column-oriented databases the time for business transactions like dunning, could be reduced from 20 minutes to one second. Traditionally, the data values in a database are stored in a row-oriented fashion, with complete tuples stored in adjacent blocks on disk or in main memory. This allows for fast access of single tuples, but is not well suited for accessing a set of values from a single column. The columnar storage of tuples in in-memory database allows scanning any columns corresponding to the attributes of the selection criteria to determine the matching tuples. The offsets of the matching values are used as an index to retrieve the values of the remaining attributes, avoiding the need to read data that is not required for the result set.
